Beef,Lamb, Goat, Heirloom Vegetables, and fruit(mostly berries). |
Our farm is located in the Appalachian mountains of Washington County, MD. The farm is 162 acres, roughly half pasture, half woodland, and bordered by thousands of acres of forest. Belle Prairie Farm is a diversified family operation that practices sustainable and organic methods (although not certified yet, we are working towards that goal !!!).This upcoming season we will have our vegetables certified naturally grown which is a grassroots organic certification. We have been homesteading since 2008, and have been slowly developing a farming enterprise, selling directly to consumers, and aiming to get some more restaurants on board. This year we will expand to sell our produce at a couple of farmer’s markets and to local cooperatives. We produce fruits and vegetables on ~2 acre and working at expanding this aspect of the farm business on a few more acres. On the farm we also raise livestock on pasture including cattle, sheep, goats, as well as, some rabbits, and poultry. Our goal is to regenerate the land by utilizing multi species rotational grazing techniques, working with nature rather than against it, permaculture principles, promotion of biodiversity, soil building, and minimalizing external inputs (using what is on the farm already).

Practices (our standards for raising or making our products)
Belle prairie Farm follows sustainable and organic practices with no use of synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides. We truly believe that health comes from the soil so we put a lot of work into its improvement through applications of compost and heavy mulching. We also implement a lot of permaculture principles on the farm including use of nitrogen fixing legumes and shrubs, plants that attract beneficial insects, nutrient accumulators, and sheet mulching. A majority of our vegetables are heirlooms and of many different varieties . Livestock health is intrinsically tied to having access to clean, fresh pasture to graze on so we rotate them throughout the farm every few days. We maintain high quality standards so that our produce is the most delicious, nutritious, fresh, and clean as possible.
